It is important to remember that alpha lipoic acid has two forms: S-Lipoic and R-Lipoic acids. Based on our test, the ORP of one lipoic acid product (which contains both S and R forms) was +144mv., while another product (which contains only R form) was -184mv. For ORP, the lower the number, the higher the antioxidant power, potentially. The high positive (+) value generally indicates a substance as highly pro-oxidative, whereas a high negative (-) value indicates a substance with highly anti-oxidative effects. Testing was conducted on two different occasions and the results were consistent: R form of lipoic acid produced substantially lower ORP values.

α-Lipoic acid regulates lipid metabolism through induction of sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) and activation of AMP-activated protein kinase.
ALA activates both SIRT1 and AMPK, which leads to lipid-lowering effects in vitro and in vivo. These findings suggest that ALA may have beneficial effects in the treatment of dyslipidaemia and obesity.

Effect of alpha-lipoic acid combined with creatine monohydrate on human skeletal muscle creatine and phosphagen concentration.
These findings indicate that co-ingestion of alpha-lipoic acid with creatine and a small amount of sucrose can enhance muscle total creatine content as compared to the ingestion of creatine and sucrose or creatine alone.

ALA increased the NAD(+)/NADH ratio to enhance SIRT1 activity.
ALA subsequently increased AMPK and ACC phosphorylation, leading to increased palmitate β-oxidation and decreased intracellular triacylglycerol accumulation in C(2)C(12) myotubes. In cells treated with nicotinamide or transfected with SIRT1 siRNA, ALA-mediated AMPK/ACC phosphorylation, intracellular triacylglycerol accumulation and palmitate β-oxidation were reduced, suggesting that SIRT1 is an upstream regulator of AMPK. ALA increased ATGL and suppressed FAS protein production in C(2)C(12) myotubes. Oral administration of ALA in diabetic mice fed on a high-fat diet and db/db mice dramatically reduced the body weight and visceral fat content.
